The OSHA permit-required confined space standard requires employers to make provision for rescue of workers before allowing them to enter a permit space. Although not specifically required by the OSHA standard, establishing a written emergency response plan or procedure is an excellent way to ensure compliance. It’s also required under ANSI/ASSE Z117.1-2009, Safety Requirements for Confined Spaces, and is widely regarded as a best practice. This Model Procedure is a good illustration of such a plan.
