Under U.S. Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations, there are 9 classes of hazardous materials classified according to the dangers they pose. Each class has its own symbol displayed in a diamond-shaped field. Several classes, including Class 1, Explosives and Class 2, Gases, have multiple divisions. Because classification determines the requirements that apply to transport it safely, it’s crucial to know and be able to recognize the different Hazmat hazard symbols.
